Video Description:

Winner-Young Adult Category! Eventually the burnout in America was too much for this cradle Catholic. Enough was enough, so Fr. John and his friends ‘medicated’ by going outdoors as one option in high school. God’s blessings upon the state of Colorado are often reaped by its locals in the high country as we natives call the sacred tundra and crisp treeline (where Deer turn to Elk for all you non-natives). It was here, in mountains similar to the Italian Alps, where Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati ventured, and where Fr. John began to find answers to this life’s wild journey on the front line. By the end of this story from Fr. John Nepil, the essence of adventure is clear, resolute, and addicting, as proven by the crowd on top of Quandary Peak; a Colorado 14er that rises 14,265 feet above sea level.
Why would a group of college students follow a man of faith to the top of a mountain–and a group of CU-Boulder students none the less! A collection of youth eager for life, fun, adventure…and purpose, yes! The images from the video above shed light to that purpose-driven college experience that most students miss out on, but which Fr. John is quickly sharing with the JPII Generation, and beyond. Watch, listen, and soak in the beauty of creation with Aquinas Alpine!

Filming Crew: Seth DeMoor & Joseph DeMoor. Special thanks to Fr. John Nepil

Filmmaker Bio: Seth DeMoor’s first encounter with the Catholic faith came from his mother and father high in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
Sunday Mass was always part of the family’s weekly happenings. Even though he grew up at 8,000 feet above sea level, this did not translate to a heightened longing for the Catholic faith. The Catholic calisthenics at Mass never traveled from his bones to his heart. Catholicism at the end of high school left him wondering what is the Catholic faith? How does one live it out daily?
On January 3rd, 2010, Seth DeMoor ‘cast into the deep’ on a 2,400-mile bicycle ride across the United States from Florida to Colorado. Why? Because at the University of Colorado, Seth encountered stories from people of authenticity, who were young and all about sacrificing their lives for the Catholic faith. It was a beautiful encounter, so much so that he knew the world needed to hear their stories. And so was born www.OneBillionStories.com.

YOUCAT/Catechism Inspiration: YOUCAT 66: “Was it part of God’s plan for men to suffer and die?”
God does not want men to suffer and die. God’s original idea for man was paradise: life forever and peace between God and man, their environment, and between man and woman.

Video Description:

Winner-Missionary Spirit Category! The Mutunga Partnership is a micro finance organisation that is committed to helping the poorest help themselves. Seven years ago, Morris Stuart felt inspired to begin an organisation that saw dignity and respect given to the poorest of the poor. He feels that faith requires action. I was privileged enough to join him on his latest trip to Kenya to meet some clients and hear their stories. This film reflects but a fraction of my experience yet does speak of how moved I was to see, at the grass roots level, the impact of one human being, obedience, faith and imagination!

The area of the YOUCAT that inspired our film was the forward by Pope Benedict XVI. In it, he encourages youth to “study this Catechism with passion and perseverance,” especially with “how deeply the community of faith has been wounded recently.” We decided to create a video that would introduce the YOUCAT to young people so that they may live out the Holly Father’s message to them.

Video Description:

(Portuguese with English subtitles) Nowadays in Europe there is much talk about a “Vocations Crisis”, as the number of priests and sisters have been declining in the last years. In spite of that, the existence of increasingly committed lay people in Church is obvious. We automatically link the word “vocation” with “priestly vocation”, but, in fact, the entire humanity has a vocation, a call from God.
My video is a journalistic approach to exploring the concept of “Vocation” in a deeper meaning.

Filmmaker Bio:
I’m 21 years old, recently graduated in “Communication Sciences: Journalism” at the University of Porto.

I did my curricular internship in Jornal de Notícias, one of the biggest newspapers in Portugal, in its online section. There, I made content production to the website of the newspaper (video and text reports).

During these three months, I developed essential skills to my career: news writing, filmmaking, video editing, synthesis skills, etc.

Before this working experience, however, I tried to develop my skills in other newspapers and in a TV channel. I was a collaborator in Jornal Universitário do Porto, in the webradio Jornalismo Porto Rádio and in the cyberjournal Jornalismo Porto Net. I completed an internship in Canal180, a portuguese TV channel focused on culture and arts.

I am passionate about the audiovisual, the multimedia journalism and about creative writing. I believe it’s possible to make journalism in a creative way and, sometimes, almost artistic. I like to tell stories through images and to use the literary rules to tell real stories.

I believe in the future of a good journalism, which offers new things, in spite of always giving the public what it wants to read. I believe in an educative journalism, which resists the pressure of economic competition.

Also, I’m a Christian and a lay missionary of a congregation (http://www.misionerasdelsantisimo.org/) and I try to use my professional skills to evangelize.

Respondents:
Leonel Claro (missionary priest)
Maricruz Ortiz (missionary sister)
Miguel Peixoto (lay missionary and engineering student)
Torquato (consecrated layman and professor)
Teresa Valente (lay missionary and family doctor)
Ricardo Ascensão (lay missionary and school secretary)

Film by Inês Rocha

YOUCAT/Catechism Inspiration:
I was inspired by the theme of “Vocation,” particularly #138 and #139 of the YOUCAT.

Video Length: 6 min 59 sec

Filmmaker Bio:
Vlogging from the age of 16, Renee has been on YouTube sharing her daily insights as a Catholic teen for almost two years. She is driven by a desire to show her generation that they are called to be saints TODAY, and that being a teen is not an excuse to “go out, party and live your life the way you want” as today’s culture promotes.

Why ‘Reborn Pure’? Well ladies and gentlemen, that’s her name! The day Renee happened to figure out in 2011 that her name, Renee Catherine, meant ‘Reborn Pure’, was one of the greatest days in her motivation towards sainthood. Her hope of eventual purification in Christ was written in her name. Her parents were not even aware of the name coincidence. Ever since, Renee has been on Facebook and YouTube showing her generation that, “If you know the truth, PURSUE IT, no matter what age you are!” She started and is the administrator of “New Catholic Generation” (http://newcatholicgeneration.com/) and prays it reaches many Catholic teens and supportive adults of today’s generation.

Cast and Crew:
Thank you to my siblings for helping me on some of the tricky parts! Also, I thank all the other young teens on YouTube under “New Catholic Generation” for encouraging me to make this video even though I had only 3 days to do it

Video Description:

“Men of Faith” hopes to convey the importance of prayer for oneself and for others. This video is focused around the lives of three men of faith: the priest who prays for his congregation, the father and head of a household who is in need of prayer for himself and his family, and the man discerning his vocation. With the Year of Faith in mind, we hope this video sparks a revolution for all men of faith, in particular, to stand up and live their faith.

The spiritual life is a struggle and the battlefield is the human heart. We are free to decide, but of a sinful life we should take no part.

Contest: 2013 Goodness Reigns “Share the Story”

Created By: Kelly Butler
Location: Damascus, OR, USA
Experience Level: Moderate
Filmmaker Age: 21
Video Length: 2 min 35 sec

Filmmaker Bio:
Born and raised in Oregon, I am a senior Communication Arts & Theology major at Franciscan University of Steubenville. I am a passionately Catholic artist that seeks a beautiful union between faith and media. Film is my passion; Christ is my Savior.

Cast and Crew:
Written, Directed & Produced by Kelly Butler

YOUCAT/Catechism Inspiration:
Spiritual Warfare. I was speaking to my parish priest and he told me of this really cool analogy between the devil and flies that inspired me to write a poem. Often times we like to share how beautiful the faith is and its positive benefits, which are wonderful, but the reality is that living the Christian life isn’t always easy. We endure much suffering, but it is made beautiful in Christ and it is beyond worth fighting for.
