Leading up to World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid, GR Bloggers Erika and Rebekah will be checking in periodically with two young adults preparing to make the pilgrimage themselves. It all starts NOW!

Suzanne Haugh has worked as a Catholic journalist for over 11 years. She lives in Louisville, KY, with her husband of 17 years and their three children.

Erika will be keeping tabs on youth minister Stephan Lenahan, who can’t wait to lead the teens and college students from his Texas parish to World Youth Day 2011.

The 24-year-old has been to three World Youth Days—Toronto in 2002, Cologne in 2005 and Sydney in 2008—and is excited to experience the trips as a youth minister.

Stephen will lead a group of 50 from St. Anthony of Padua Church in The Woodlands, Texas, and is looking forward to seeing WYD through their eyes.

“We are taking mostly college students and older high school students who grew up in our youth ministry program. The majority of these people have never been to WYD and many of them have never been to Europe at all,” he said. “I’m most excited for them to see how big our faith is and how the Church is universal in a very real way. Before going to Madrid we will go to Assisi and Rome to see the heart of the Church.”

Rebekah will be keeping up with her lifelong friend and childhood travel partner, Sarah Osman.

Sarah is on the diocesan planning committee for the Diocese of Austin and is helping to market and fundraise for the trip to WYD 2011. Right now the diocese has about 50 people registered, and they are projecting that up to 200 young adults and youth will register. She is excited to follow this group of amazing Catholic young adults on their year-long preparation for their WYD pilgrimage.

“The pilgrimage starts now,” Sarah says, “and that’s one thing we keep telling everyone. It starts now, start praying now, learning about it now; don’t wait until you get there.”
