Here are Eve’s responses:
1. The Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul is celebrated on June 29. How did each saint die and where are they buried?
Saint Peter was crucified upside-down, and Saint Paul was beheaded.
Saint Peter is in Saint Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City; Saint Paul is in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome.
2. During the month of June, what saint’s birthday do we celebrate? What day is it? There are only two other birthdays we celebrate on the Church calendar. Who are they and what are the days?
On June 24 we celebrate the birth of Saint John the Baptist. The other two are Christmas Day: Nativity of Our Lord and September 8: Nativity BVM.
3. Throughout the centuries there have been many miracles of the Eucharist, ways in which Christ lovingly reminds us, “I am here!” One such miracle occurred in Lanciano, Italy, in the 8th Century at the Church of St. Legontian. What happened and what is the interesting connection between this and the Shroud of Turnin?
In Lanciano, a priest was doubtful in the Eucharist and when he began Consecration of the mass for the people of the town when the Eucharist and wine was turned into the actual body and blood of Christ. The connection between this and the Shroud of Turin is that the blood type was the same between the two.
4. Who is the patron saint for the next World Youth Day in Madrid, Spain?
The saints approved as patrons of the youth event are St. Isidore the Worker and his wife St. María de la Cabeza; St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross; St. Rose of Lima; St. Francis Xavier; St. John of Avila, St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Rafael Arnáiz. This last saint was canonized just last October.
5. A non-Catholic approaches you and asks, “Why do you guys believe in the Pope? Where do you get that teaching from?” In a few sentences, explain to your friend the reasons why the man wearing white in Rome is called the Vicar of Christ.
“Vicar of Christ” is a a title given the Pope implying his supreme and universal primacy, both of honor and of jurisdiction, over the Church of Christ. It is founded on the words of Jesus to St. Peter: “Feed my lambs. . . . Feed my sheep” (John 21:16-17), by which Jesus constituted the Prince of the Apostles guardian of His entire flock in His own place, thus making him His Vicar and fulfilling the promise made in Matthew 16:18-19.
