Meet Rebekah
I’ve always been drawn to the secular media world. To be honest, I enjoy keeping up with tabloids, I watch 90210, and I am addicted to Gossip Girl. … I pray daily that God will guide me and help me to use my love of pop culture for Him in whatever way He needs me.
I was born and raised Catholic. I know you can’t technically be born a religion but when you’re born into a family whose grandmother wanted to baptize you in the sink because waiting two months for the official baptism is too long, I’d say it’s pretty darn close.
My parents did a wonderful job raising my three siblings and I in a household that had priests over for dinner and kept holy water at our front door. I am very fortunate to have parents who made sure we went to mass together weekly and who made a pilgrimage out of family vacations.
I’ve always been drawn to the secular media world. To be honest, I enjoy keeping up with tabloids, I watch 90210, and I am addicted to Gossip Girl. I feel my call is in the journalism/film/theatre area, I’m not really sure where yet, but that calls me to be actively immersed in our media and entertainment culture.
And there’s a danger in that because there is a chance that I will succumb to worldly values. The first way for me to ward off any dangerous temptations adherent in today’s society is for me to be aware of them and how they affect me.
The second way is for me to use my craft to bring my values to the industry one day at a time and one step at a time. I pray daily that God will guide me and help me to use my love of pop culture for Him in whatever way He needs me.
I am a part of secular society, but by living out my faith in everything I do, I hope to bring about a change in that society. And when this task seems impossible, overwhelming, and hopeless I’ll remember Mother Theresa’s words, “My call is to be faithful not successful. Success is God’s business, faithfulness is mine.”

I am so proud of you! And I am glad I can call you my friend! You are a very strong person. And we all know it can be hard to keep our faith so strong in this world today but you do it and you inspire others. You are an amazing person and I love you!
I think you have incredible insight! I wish you were my friend. It’s so refreshing to get a youth Catholic’s prospective on the secular world. Save room for the Holy Spirit!

This is right on, Rebekah! It’s a lot like the call of Jesus, enter the world fully and be an instrument of transformation for the willing.
I’m attending a conference at Notre Dame in late May on how to kindle the faith of the young, May 23 – 28. Come to it, be my guest! Interested? Let me know. Adrienne

Rebekah, I have no doubt God will use you exactly where you are for His greater good. The fact that you are aware of your vulnerabilities in the world says much. But we can’t always hide from the world, either. Sometimes, we need to be immersed in it in order to be most effective. So, stay strong through staying close to Jesus’ and Mary’s heart and you will be just fine! How can you go wrong with God in your heart?
