Meet Rebekah

I’ve always been drawn to the secular media world. To be honest, I enjoy keeping up with tabloids, I watch 90210, and I am addicted to Gossip Girl. … I pray daily that God will guide me and help me to use my love of pop culture for Him in whatever way He needs me.

Suzanne Haugh directs the charitable non-profit Goodness Reigns, Inc. and has worked as a Catholic journalist for over 13 years. She lives in Louisville, KY, with her husband of 20 years and their three children.

I was born and raised Catholic. I know you can’t technically be born a religion but when you’re born into a family whose grandmother wanted to baptize you in the sink because waiting two months for the official baptism is too long, I’d say it’s pretty darn close.

My parents did a wonderful job raising my three siblings and I in a household that had priests over for dinner and kept holy water at our front door.  I am very fortunate to have parents who made sure we went to mass together weekly and who made a pilgrimage out of family vacations.

I’ve always been drawn to the secular media world. To be honest, I enjoy keeping up with tabloids, I watch 90210, and I am addicted to Gossip Girl. I feel my call is in the journalism/film/theatre area, I’m not really sure where yet, but that calls me to be actively immersed in our media and entertainment culture.

And there’s a danger in that because there is a chance that I will succumb to worldly values. The first way for me to ward off any dangerous temptations adherent in today’s society is for me to be aware of them and how they affect me.

The second way is for me to use my craft to bring my values to the industry one day at a time and one step at a time. I pray daily that God will guide me and help me to use my love of pop culture for Him in whatever way He needs me.

I am a part of secular society, but by living out my faith in everything I do, I hope to bring about a change in that society.  And when this task seems impossible, overwhelming, and hopeless I’ll remember Mother Theresa’s words, “My call is to be faithful not successful.  Success is God’s business, faithfulness is mine.”
